The talented designers at René Boivin created wonderfully inventive jewelry that functioned as more than just wearable jewels. Animals could be part of lorgnettes, scent bottles or become small sculptures. This charming elephant is designed as both a figurine or, with a chain attached to the loops, a pendant. The figure replicates the actual animal with a three-dimensional body, flaring ears and matte-finished metal to simulate the skin. Precious gemstones form the eyes and toe nails and oxidized silver makes up the tusks. In India, elephants are often utilized to carry men of rank on their backs. Often, these elephants wear a headdress as on this example which is studded with diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires. The howdah or seat on the elephant's back is set with a cabochon emerald; the two loops serving as a back support and pommel. For an illustration of the pendant, see Francoise Cailles, René Boivin, Jeweller, London, 1994, page 356.
