Designed as two single and circular-cut diamond stalks, bearing oval cabochon moonstone blossoms, gathered by a baguette-cut diamond ribbon, mounted in platinum, circa 1950

The flower...always beautiful, always desirable...has been a dominant motif in jewelry design for a good part of the past two centuries. Since flowers are small and portable, specimens can easily be transported to the studio for study, enabling designers to draw directly from real models. Such was the case with Tiffany's orchid jewelry that the firm exhibited in the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris. The illustrated Tiffany spray with its naturalistic depiction of the pussy willow may also have been drawn from an actual plant. Moonstones replicate the fuzzy catkins while small diamonds simulate the nubs on the branch. This brooch was exhibited in the Tiffany & Co. exhibition, "The Treasures of Tiffany" that the firm held to celebrate the first anniversary of their collaboration with Faraone in Milan, Italy, from November 29 to December 6, 1990.
