Shin Sookju was born in Koryong and he is well-known as an early Choson-period court poet and classical scholar. He was one of a small group of scholars who aided King Sejong (r.1418-50) in promulgating a national script, now known as han'gul. He joined a mission to Japan, and was a member of the Chiphyonjon, a royal research institute conducting political studies, compiling commentaries on the Confucian classics, issuing monographs on geography and medicine, compiling official histories of the kingdom, and giving lectures for the king and his court.

It is a poem written in four lines of seven characters each. The poem can be translated as follows:

In the myriad valleys the autumn wind [blows through]
the mountains at dusk
With attention focused [I] sit down without a word.
Of all the people who swarm before my eyes,
who can recognize me?
[I] really feel there is no way [other than the way]
of Buddha.
