FLOYD GOTTFREDSON (1907-1986)
Mickey Mouse in The Race For Riches 1980 Original art. Floyd Gottfredson went to work for Walt Disney in 1929 as part of the first wave of artists hired by the newly founded studio. He assumed responsibility for writing and drawing the Mickey Mouse comic strip that for the next 10 years spun tales of Mickey and his friends going through exotic adventures. As an employee of the Walt Disney organization, Gottfredson was never allowed to sign his name to any of his work. For most of his life, Gottfredson remained one of the great unknown Disney comic artists. Then in 1968 collector Malcolm Willits investigated the still uncredited artist, and in the February 1968 issue of Vanguard publicly revealed Gottfredson as the artist behind Mickey Mouse.
In 1978 Mr. Willits commissioned Gottfredson to create a series of 24 paintings of his most memorable tales. This painting, completed in July of 1980, six years before Gottfredson's death, is a wonderful example of the artist's ability to "freeze-frame" Mickey in yet another exciting adventure. Mickey and his longtime friend Horace Horsecollar ride out west with only an ancient map to guide them to a buried bag of gold nuggets. Peg Leg Pete and his evil companion ambush the pair at a desert waterhole and the battle is on. Watercolor on board, framed.
Excellent
