Born in Kyoto, Ogawa Sen'yo originally studied Buddhist painting. As a pupil of Asai Chu (1856-1907), he exhibited Western-style paintings in the Nikakai and Inten exhibitions in Tokyo, but for most of his career he was devoted to traditional Japanese subjects and techniques.
