Noted for its beautiful beaches and surrounding countryside, the Wakanoura coast of Wakayama Prefecture forms the eastern extremity of the Inland Sea National Park. Yoshida's passion for nature is well-documented in prints, watercolors, and oil paintings, and the artist chose the subject of this painting with care. A romantic realist from Kurume in Fukuoka Prefecture, Yoshida painted with lyricism and an eye to geographic detail. His renderings of locations as well-known as Wakanoura, Mt. Fuji, and the Grand Canyon are stirring for their evocative appreciation of each landscape.

Yoshida studied art initially in Kyoto and later in Tokyo at Fudosha, a private art school directed by the Western-style painter Koyama Shotaro (1857-1916). He exhibited oil paintings and watercolors of outdoor scenes in Bunten and Teiten exhibitions and in group exhibitions of the Taiheiyo Gakai (Pacific Ocean Painting Circle) an artists' cultural group that he co-founded in 1902.
