Woolworth Building (The Dance) is generally considered to be the key image in the series Six New York Etchings created by Marin between 1913 and 1915 under the sponsorship of Alfred Stieglitz and his gallery at 291 Madison Avenue. This etching embodies Marin's fascination with the dynamism of modern life and his "desire to express...those influences which play with one another; great masses pulling smaller masses, each subject to some degree to the other's power."
