The Warrington Collection, formed in Cincinnati between the early 1920's and the late 1940's, reflects the unified tastes of two generations, Elsie Holmes Warrington and her son John Wesley. The family's roots in Ohio date back to the eighteenth century, but much of John Wesley Warrington's youth was spent travelling abroad with his parents, which clearly influenced his collecting tastes. Educated at Yale, Harvard and Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, John Warrington served as a Captain in the American Field Service from 1942-5 when he was mentioned in Despatches.
Returning to Ohio he spent his working life at the law firm of Graydon, Head and Ritchie, becoming senior partner. He also took an active involvement in other aspects of the cultural life of Cincinnati. He was a director of the Cincinnati Art Museum for 54 years and President and Chairman for over 20. He was also closely involved with the Cincinnati Institute of Fine Art, the Taft Museum and Cincinnati Music Hall. Apart from his law practice he was also, for twenty years, a director of Fifth Third Bank and of the Cincinnati Equitable Insurance Company.
Despite all of this activity, John Warrington still found time to work on his collection, cataloguing and generously lending to many exhibitions. This sale of Important Prints from the Collection of John Wesley Warrington stands as a tribute to him and to his keen eye. The prints which came from many illustrious collections will now have this distinguished provenance to add to their history.
