(22 x 14 3/8 in.), publisher's gilt vellum over pasteboard, traces of ties, edges red-sprinkled, old repair to tail of spine, turn-in of lower cover soot-blackened (not affecting endpapers or text block), modern folding cloth case, letterpress title and first engraved title slightly soiled and with minor marginal repairs and chipping, 5 maps with short marginal tears or fold breaks, minor creasing to about 8 maps, maps 2 (India) and 21 (Nanking) more severely creased, the latter marginally repaired, map 8 (Cyprus) with female deity in cartouche scribbled over in ink, occasional light foxing to outer blank margins, marginal dampstain to last 20 text leaves. Dutch text, letterpress title with woodcut printer's device, two engraved titles, 28 double-page engraved maps, partially hand-colored (a few in outline only), the cartouches and titles uncolored. The Asia volume of the Dutch edition of Blaeu's Atlas Major, first published in Latin in 1662. Part 1 contains 11 maps of Asia including a general map of Asia and 10 regional maps ranging from Cyprus to "Tartaria" or Outer Mongolia, all but the map of Arabia previously published in Blaeu's first and second atlases, the 1630 Atlantis appendix and the earliest 2-volume edition of the Theatrum orbis terrarum, published in German in 1635. Part 2, containing 16 maps of China and one of Japan, is a reprint of vol. VI of the Theatrum (1655), edited by the Jesuit Martino Martinio, which was the first European atlas of China.
