The Governor of Massachusetts Bay, Lord Bellomont, took up his appointment in 1695 with special instructions to suppress piracy along the colony's coast. William Kidd was given command of a privateer, the Adventure, and began the task. Excessive zeal caused Kidd to turn pirate himself, plundering ships of friendly powers. Returning to Boston in July 1699 from Madagascar (a well-known pirate hang-out) he was gaoled and sent to London for trial in April 1700. Charged with the murder of Moore, his gunner, and with the plundering and seizing of six different ships, he was found guilty and hanged at Execution Dock on 23 May 1701.
