LINCOLN, ABRAHAM, President. Autograph note signed ("A.Lincoln") as President, to an unidentified recipient, [Washington, D.C.], 7 January 1865. 50 x 80 mm. (2 x 3¼ in.), 9 lines plus signature and dateline written on the recto and verso of a notecard, smudged.
THE PRESIDENT INTERVENES ON BEHALF OF A PRIVATE
A note which may have resulted from a personal visit to President Lincoln by a soldier's wife, asking him to intercede on the Private's behalf. Lincoln responds: "Augustus Jesse's wife complains that her husband, as a private in 7 Reg[imen]t V.R.C. is deprived of some of his rights. Will the commander of his regiment please look to this?" Not in Basler, and apparently unpublished.
