STUART, JAMES EWELL BROWN, General, C.S.A.. Autograph letter signed ("J.E.B. Stuart") as Brigadier General and Captain of Cavalry, to Virginia Governor John Letcher, Munson's Hill, 24 September 1861. 2 pages, 8vo, recipient's docket on verso, central fold neatly reinforced, otherwise in very good condition.
"NO CAVALRY HAS SEEN THE SERVICE THAT THE 1ST CAVALRY HA[S]"
An angry letter from J.E.B. Stuart to Governor Letcher complaining about delayed promotions for his junior cavalry officers. Ironically, the letter is dated the same day as Stuart's own promotion to Brigadier General was finalized. He writes: "I see that several promotions have to date been made in the cavalry and I am surprised & mortified to see that my captains have been entirely overlooked. My word for it no cavalry has seen the service that the 1st Cavalry had before Patterson's Army as well as McDowell's. Capt. Carter has received praise & recommendation as strong as words could make it for his gallantry on th 21st. in the only charge made in the face of advancing columns of the enemy. You are aware how anxious I have been to have him appointed Major in the place of Swan who prefers Infy or artillery & whose transfer would be attended with no difficulty whatever. I have urgently recommended Capt. Fitzhugh Lee to the post of Lt. Col. & I suppose he is ere this appointed. Now if as rumour has it I am Brigadier General I presume Lee will become Col. and then I bespeak [sic] your remembrance of R. Welby Carter for Lt. Col. I do this as an act of justice to a gallant officer in my Regt which yields tonone on the continent in gallantry & efficiency. Of Capt. W.E. ["Grumble"] Jones I have already written to you..."
W.E. "Grumble" Jones was promoted to Colonel in September 1861 and, after commanding the Seventh Cavalry, made Briagadier General.
