An unusual letter with surprisingly strong words on the Presidency, five years after Truman left the White House: "I certainly appreciated all the time you spent answering the telephone and helping me meet the Democrats while I was in Washington. Gene was grateful to you, too, because it is almost an impossible job for one man to handle. I would advise every young man never to be President of the United States. Of course, only one out of one hundred seventy million gets that chance every four years. He thinks he is on top of the world but soon finds out different. I hope Mrs. Vaughan and the family are all right. I enjoyed meeting David and his wife. She is a lovely young lady, and I always did think highly of David and the daughter, too..."
