Autograph free frank signed ("G:Washington") on folded cover sheet (letter not present), addressed in Washington's hand to "William Thornton Esqr Federal City," marked in another hand "Free," very distinct circular "Alex[andria] Va Nov. 18" postmark. [Mount Vernon, 18 October 1798]. 1 page, 4to, 185 x 187 mm. (7¼ x 7½ in.), WITH INTACT SEAL IMPRRESSION IN BLACK WAX: the cursive monogram "GW" in an oval cartouche, small seal hole patched, scattered spotting, matted and glazed in a giltwood frame incorporating an engraved portrait of Washington after Gilbert Stuart. Unexamined out of frame.
