RUSSELL, H.C. Photographs of The Milky-Way & Nubeculae taken at Sydney Observatory, 1890. [Introduction by H.C. Russell]. 16 mounted albumen prints. 4to, original pale green cloth; ex-library copy (Smithsonian Institution, Astrophysical Observatory) with stamp on title-page; a few mounts soiled, some prints with fading. Rare.
"In April, 1890, the Equatorial Mounting for the Photographic Telescope having been completed so far as it was possible without the object lens, it was determined to make use of it for taking photographs of the Milky Way until the objective, which had been ordered from Sir Howard Grubb in September, 1887, should arrive. The Photographs which follow are the fruit of that resolution. They are believed to be the first of their kind of the Southern Skies, and they present well-known Star Spaces under new conditions, so much so, that in several important respects we must modify the views which had been the outcome of the study of these Star Spaces with ordinary telescopes" (Introduction). (Photo-Illustrated)
