Robert Carmel worked hard and enjoyed life to the hilt. A native New Yorker who grew up in Lawrence, Long Island, he joined Williams Real Estate upon graduation from Amherst College, and as Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors continued to work until shortly before his death in June from lymphoma cancer.
His career spanned all phases of real estate, both as an owner of significant properties and as a broker of major leasing transactions. He was best known in his community though for his untiring philanthropic activities. In 1991 he received the Jack D. Weiler Award from the Real Estate Division of the United Jewish Appeal for his unifying judiciary activities. He served as chariman of the UJA Federation's Real Estate Division and on the board of Yeshiva University's Benjamin N. Cordoza School of Law and Temple Israel; he was also an ardent supporter of the Friends of Israel Defense Forces. There were no limits to his generosity, and medical research has been greatly served by Robert and Susan Carmel's gift of a chair in Algesiology to the University of Medicine and Dentistry in New Jersey and by their renovation of the Bone-Marrow Transplant Unit at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in Manhattan. He created a gymnasium at an Israeli air force base in memory of his father, and is survived by his wife, his children and a grandchild.
He reserved his principal devotion, however, for his family, and with his wife, Susan, he assembled this impressive group of paintings. Their enthusiasm for these works was infectious and they never ceased to find new delight in their favorite paintings, among which were Monet's Falaises et voiliers à Pourville and Femme dans un jardin by Vincent van Gogh.
