Lot Essay

This watercolor, as illustrated in the Vollard archives and in the literature by Venturi (op. cit.) and Rewald (op. cit.), shows the sheet extended to the left side with an unrelated pencil sketch. Rewald assumed that the sheet was cut down before 1956, but the left side and the bottom edge have actually been folded under. If the sheet were unfolded it would measure overall 12½ x 18in. (31.8 x 45.8cm.).
