The model and her pose in this drawing is closely related to a pastel of the same title drawn in 1891-1895 (P.A. Lemoisne, Degas et son oeuvre, Paris, 1946, vol. III, no. 1110), studies of circa 1898 (Lemoisne, vol. III, nos. 1316-1318), and the oil painting Les modistes (Lemoisne, vol. III, no. 1315). Degas displayed his first millinery pictures in 1882, and in these works his perceptive critical eye captured the class differences between the shop's bourgeois clients and the attendant shopgirls. In the Modiste series the pairs of figures are co-workers seen behind the scenes engaged at their livelihood.
