Monet left Paris for Antibes during the second week of January, 1888. There he stayed at the Château del Piède, a hotel frequented by artists. Monet fell in love with Antibes and its environs, and went to work at once, painting with great concentration through the end of February.
Monet returned to Paris in late April. The gallery immediately put the ten canvases on view and they garnered positive responses from critics and collectors.
