The sitter for this sculpture was the Russian born painter D.O. Widhopff (1867-1933). Although known as a painter of landscapes and still lifes, Widhopff was also a cartoonist for the Gobelins and Beauvais tapestry guilds. He lived in Montmartre during La belle époque and exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, Salon d'Automne and Salon des Tuileries.
