Study for Agony I is one of approximately six preparatory drawings which relate to one of Gorky's most important paintings, Agony I, 1947 (Collection of The Museum of Modern Art, New York). According to Harry Rand, 'Between 1946 and 1047 Gorky produced a series of works on the theme he called Agony, which Ethel Schwabacher described as dealing with the "battle of the sexes"' (H. Rand, Arshile Gorky: The Implications of Symbols, Montclair 1981, p. 203).
