Lot Essay

Such masks have traditionally been referred to as representing sea spirits. They may well represent a cultural hero, Azyu, who was killed in a battle with his enemies losing his nose in the process. Azyu was said to have made a mask of this type to represent his original appearance. He sent it to New Caledonia where it became the prototype of this mask style (see McKesson, 1990, p.85)
