This portrait of Leonora Carrington dates from 1937 - a period during which Carrington was living with Max Ernst in Saint-Martin d'Aredeche. Fini, who had an affair with Ernst some years before, went to visit the couple and did the portrait during her stay. There exists an anecdote which describes the two artists as having quarreled shortly afterwards, and Carrington tossing out the painting. Fortunately, it was rescued by a friendly neighbor and thus preserved for future admiration.
