Lot Essay

This painting is the first large Orilla created by Tomás Sánchez upon his return to Santa Fé de Guanabacoa from Mexico and his successful show there at Galería Arvil in November 1989. Sánchez remained in Cuba only for a short time before returning to Mexico for extended periods of time and eventually taking up residence in the United States in 1993.

The image contains the typical mistery inherent in Sánchez imaginary landscapes. His detailed descriptions and masterly portrayal of light result in sublime visions of nature.

An extensive artistic education can be detected in the treatment of the subject and in the resolution of the technical components of the composition. Through the correct manipulation of volume, the artist creates a perspective which attracts the viewer towards the interior of the jungle, a utopian place where harmony of body and soul appears to be within grasp.
