The present bronze is a variant of the reduction of Saint-Gaudens' 1886 monument The Puritan. The work was commissioned for the town of Springfield, Massachusetts by Chester W. Chapin, a descendant of the minister and the model for the figure. The inscription on the present lot and the provenance would indicate that this was either a presentation bronze or a special commission.
