Lot Essay

According to Michael Richman, Editor of the Daniel Chester French Papers at the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Washington, D.C., Narcissa (or Vanity) was made in an edition of approximately six bronzes and two silvers during French's lifetime, as recorded in the sculptor's account books. Unlike most of French's production, it is a personal piece, not intended as a study for a monument of larger statue.
