FIRST EDITION, FIRST BINDING, of Tolkein's second work of fiction (preceded by The Hobbit and followed by The Lord of the Rings). PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by the author in his calligraphic handwriting on verso of front free endpaper: "Sarah with best wishes from J.R.R.T." With illustrations by Pauline Diana Baynes. Hammond A4a: "...'Farmer Giles of Ham' was originally an impromtu story told to the Tolkein children when they took shelter under a bridge during a sudden rainstorm that interrupted a family picnic." A very good copy. A Richard Manney set of The Lord of the Flies was also inscribed to a "Sarah" (see his sale, Sotheby's New York, 11 October 1991, lot 298).
