WHARTON, EDITH. "Chartres." Fair copy 28-line manuscript poem in two stanzas, signed below title at head ("Edith Wharton"). 2 pages, 4to, written on recto and verso, some wear at edges, several chips and tears (one tear crossing one line on verso), pale stain on recto.
The first stanza begins:
"Immense, august, like some Titanic bloom, /
The mightly choir unfolds its lithic core, /
Petalled with panes of azure, gules and or, /
Splendidly lambent in the Gothic gloom, /
And stamened with keen flamelets that illume /
The pale high-altar. On the prayer-worn floor, /
By surging worshippers thick-thronged of yore..."
