A FINE OOWEKEENO OR KWAKIUTL FRONTLET
Of rectangular form with angled corners, carved in high relief with the head of a thunderbird with protruding beak turning downward, almond shaped eyes with circular pupils, arched brows and downward turned mouth, surmounted by the head of a killer whale with a tall pierced dorsal fin, below a round human face on both sides of which are the talons of the thunderbird, details painted in blue and red with abalone shell inlays in the eyes, mouth and around the frame, restorations at both sides

Lot Essay

Brown (1996) has attributed this frontlet to the same artist who made another now in the University of British Columbia Museum of Anthropology, Vancouver (A3605, see Hawthorn, 1967, pl. XII A). He also notes another of similar composition in the same collection (A4103, ibid. pl. XIA).
