Wright (1996) writes: "The Euro-American portrait head on the bowl of this pipe is similar in style to those on argillite ship pipes (see Wright 1985: 497-519). The band around the forehead and collar below the chin are derived from a type of commercial clay portrait pipe that was popular among smokers in the mid-19th century."
