Lot Essay

Wright (1996) writes: "This large mid-19th century ship pipe shows the fascination the Haida carver had for exotic motifs, a horse and rider, a bridle, ship's rigging, and Euro-American clothing. An abstract billet head, leaves at the bow and stern, and Euro-American figures identify this as a ship pipe, but the box-like structure at the stern with two figures inside is harder to identify."
