Lot Essay

Wright (1996) writes: "A whale with a human in its mouth and human faces in the eyes, has a large bowl in the top of the head like a blow-hole. A raven holds the whale's tail in its mouth, and a small bear-like animal crouches behind the raven's head. The large bowl and fully carved, rounded bottom indicate an early date (1820s or 1830s) for this pipe."
