Lot Essay
Wright (1996) writes: "A whale with a human figure on its chest is in front of the bowl of this pipe, which is in the back of a frog. Beneath the frog another human figure with its head facing down has its arms and legs tucked beneath the bowl of the pipe. There is a break in the pipe through the leg of a reclining figure which is missing its head. Beneath this figure is a bird with a broken recurved beak. The frog and another human figure extend their tongues, which originally would have been connected to the missing head. A raven, another figure and a beaver are at the stem end of this elaborate mid-19th century pipe."
