Lot Essay

Wright (1996) writes: "A bear (stem hole in head) reclines with a human figure on its chest. The human grasps the wing of a raven with the bowl of the pipe in the raven's head. This pipe is very similar to a group of pipes described by Wright as by the "U-String Whale" carver (Wright: 1985: 273-282). The solid-double-U cheek designs, hollowed tertiary-split-U complexes, and the form of the frog are very similar to those on a pipe in the Royal British Columbia Museum (#115798). This pipe may date to around the 1840s."
