Lot Essay

Wright (1996) writes: "This platter has a raised, high relief halibut in the middle, with a bear's head carved in low relief formlines extending from underneath the halibut's head. Four stippled bears' legs extend from behind the halibut's tail. Unconnected ovoids decorate the pointed ends of the platter. Argillite platters with Euro-American floral designs inspired by commercial pressed glass plates were replaced in the late-19th century with Haida motif platters with narrative scenes drawn from Haida mythology."
