These bud vases, although extraordinary as single objects, were part of a total design concept, or Gesamtkunstwerk. The ideal of unity shared by the Secessionists is illustrated in the contemporary photograph on the following page. The sideboard was designed by Josef Hoffmann and is laden with the extensive table service designed by Moser for the Gedeckte Tisch exhibition. This exhibition coincided with the opening of the new Wiener Werkstätte showroom in Neustiftgasse in October 1906. The present vases are two of only four ever made and could possibly be the originals seen in this photograph on the upper shelf. The second pair was produced on commission in 1911.
