A PAINTED LIMESTONE STELA OF SA-MONTU
MIDDLE KINGDOM, DYNASTY XII-EARLY DYNASTY XIII
CIRCA 1844-1750 B.C.

Carved in sunk relief, framed by a border of rectangles and topped by a kheker-frieze, the lower left with Sa-Montu seated on a low-backed chair with animal legs, an alabaster jar below the chair, the deceased wearing a short kilt, a broad collar, a bag wig and a short chin beard, holding a lotus flower in his left hand, his right arm extended forward towards an offering table piled with a conical and a round loaf of bread, a calf's head, a leg of beef, ribs, leeks and a fig, with two jars below the table, to the right a seated woman with one knee raised, wearing a black wig, holding a lotus flower to her nose, above a standing servant wearing a projecting kilt, with both arms riased, an alabaster jar in his right hand, with four bands of hieroglyphs above which reads: "(1) An offering that the king gives (to) Osiris, lord of Ankh-tawy, that he may give invocation-offerings of [bread] and beer, oxen and fowl, alabaster (vessels) and cloth, (2) incense and oil, and everything good and pure on which a god lives, (3) for the spirit of the Soldier of the Town Regiment Ankh-ib born of Dedet-Nebu true of voice. (4) An offering that the king gives (to) Osiris lord , for the spirit of the Commander in Chief of the Local Regiment Sa-Montu repeating life, born of It-en-itef," with additional text in front of the seated man which read: "The Soldier of the Town Regiment, Sa-Montu true-of-voice, born of Ibi true-of-voice," with extensive remaining color throughout
