cover 1849 (25 Mar.) entire letter from an American whaler, Hiram Clift, to his brother William at Mystic Bridge, Stonington, Ct., rated "7" and showing "SHIP" h.s. and New London c.d.s., both in red; the letter headed "New-Island. Falkland" includes "I have moored the Ship at Eagle Isleand East Falklands. I have always heard that there was Plenty whale there And I know of no one that has ever whaled there, I think My Best Chance is there. At any rate I shall try it one season, if whale come in there I think we can get some. I have got a good chart, the last English Survey And I find it very Correct. I have taken one whale, the 10th of March at Arch Islands.....". Some slight ageing on face panel though an early letter. Photo
