Lot Essay

Searching for untouched nature in order to perfect his light and colour studies, Leo Gestel wandered through the country side of Woerden, Linschoten and Montfoort in 1909. Influenced by these studies, his paintings steadily became more coloristic, smoother and less narrative, a development that would debouch circa two years later into his famous luministic compositions.
