Lot Essay

The present lot refers to Erich Wichmann, one of the first Dutch non-figurative artists, who had a sympathy for fascist ideas.
This explains why the Dutch lion depicted here lost its normal heroism. The map of Holland which forms its body is painted in the reverse, which makes the animal look the wrong way. (op.cit. Exh.cat. Rob Scholte How to Star, 1988)
