Lot Essay

In the one match, represented here, in which Shrewsbury did not make a century, against Surrey in August, 1883, he scored 97. Of his ten double centuries, seven were scored for Nottinghamshire, three in Australia. In 1887, he set the highest average ever recorded by a batsman playing first class cricket, and though this is regarded as his best season, he was throughout the 1880's and early 1890's the principal professional batsmen in England. In his last season, 1902, he again headed the batting averages.
