In the earlier match, Shrewsbury scored 267 on the first of two occasions, and W. Barnes made 115, their joint centuries largely accounting for Nottinghamshire's magnificent first innings total of 596; in the later match against Sussex, Nottinghamshire won by an innings, and there were, in fact, three centuries in their first innings total of 570: Shrewsbury's 135, W. Gunn's not out 205, and W. Barnes' 120. Shrewsbury headed the first class averages for the year, his total of 1653 runs at an average of 78.15 even putting W. G. Grace into second place. It was his most outstanding summer and then the highest average ever recorded by a batsman playing first class cricket.
