Matthias Eberle has kindly confirmed the authenticity of this work in a letter dated Berlin, 23 May 95. He states that the drawing was done for an illustrated bible. The book was going to be printed in Amsterdam in 1902 but in fact was never published. This drawing is one of two that Liebermann intended to contribute to this edition. The main character with one arm risen to heaven is a study from Kupferstichkabinett der Stiftung PreuBischer Kulturbesitz Berlin (inventory no. SZ 89)
