Lot Essay

The wardrobe derives in part from the same Grecian pattern as lot 153, and shares similar features such as the panelled doors and reeded feet. However, it is further enriched with reed-filled pilasters, inspired by an 1806 pattern in Thomas Sheraton's Cabinet Encyclopedia, 1804-7, p. 9. The pediment, whose arched crest is centred by a tablet and a demi-sunflower patera, evolved from a pattern published in Thomas Shearer's Cabinet-Maker's London Book of Prices, 1788, p. 1
