Lot Essay

The elliptic-ended writing-table, conceived en suite with the 'loo' table (lot 170), has truss-supported trestles that are tied by a turned stretcher and supported by plinths with bacchic-paws emerging from acanthus scrolls. Its trestle-ends, which derive from a 'sofa table' pattern illustrated in Thomas Sheraton's Cabinet-Dictionary, 1804, p. 28, correspond to those of 'sofa table' patterns of 1813, 1821 and 1823 illustrated in Gillows' Estimate Sketch Books, nos. 1926, 3126 and 3252
