Lot Essay
This telescopic reed-edged table is of a late 18th Century pattern entitled 'Imperial' by Gillows of London and Lancaster and was supplied with a baize-lined rack for its loose leaves. A related set of Imperial dining-tables with ten turned and reeded legs was supplied by Gillows for Broughton Hall, Yorkshire in 1813 and was subsequently illustrated in Country Life, 11 May 1951, p. 1459, fig. 2. Another Imperial table illustrated in the Estimate Sketch Books for May 1817, no. 2047, was illustrated in J. Kirk, American Furniture and the British Tradition, New York, 1982, p. 99
