A CORNFLOWER-BLUE-GLAZED GILT-DECORATED BOTTLE VASE
IRON-RED JIAQING SEAL MARK AND OF THE PERIOD

The ovoid body with tall waisted neck and garlic mouth, gilt-decorated with a dense lotus scroll around the body, the flowers issuing oranges, ju, alternating with shou characters and ruyi collars suspending musical stones, sheng, between lotus petals around the base above key-pattern around the foot and ruyi around the shoulder, the neck with lotus and wan symbols, all under a purplish-blue glaze stopping neatly around the turquoise-glazed base

A similar vase is illustrated by Avitabile, From the Dragon's Treasure, Chinese Porcelain from the 19th and 20th Century, p.28, no.16, where the author notes the combination of gold on this colour glaze appears for the first time in the Jiaqing period. Gold on blue recalls Buddhist texts, giving the combination a special significance
