Lot Essay

Although cizhou sgraffiato is one of the most popular types of decoration on pottery pillows of the Song Dynasty, the shape and decoration of this pillow makes it an extremely rare design. Cf. a pillow with a more knobbed scroll around the sides included in the exhibition, Song Ceramics from the Kwan Collection, Catalogue, no. 141.
