With deep rounded sides rising from a high foot, the exterior painted and enamelled with a pair of striding five-clawed dragons chasing flaming pearls amidst fire and cloud-scrolls above key-pattern around the base

Lot Essay

A bowl also enamelled in aubergine is illustrated in the Tokyo National Museum Catalogue, no. 539; a bowl of this shape and decoration, but enamelled in green over underglaze-blue, from the Percival David Foundation, is illustrated in Oriental Ceramics, Kodansha Series, vol. 6, fig. 179. A bowl of the same pattern but enamelled with a red and a yellow dragon from the Percival David Foundation, Catalogue, no. A774, was included in the Venice, 1954 Exhibition of Chinese Art, Catalogue, no. 721.
