A MING WHITE-GLAZED BISCUIT 'DRAGON' DISH
ENCIRCLED HONGZHI SIX-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD

With rounded sides, the interior incised in the biscuit with a descending five-clawed dragon reserved on a white-glazed ground, the reverse with two similar dragons , cresting waves and rockwork (rim chip restored)

Similar examples of these white-glazed biscuit dragon dishes have been widely exhibited. See A. Joseph, Ming Porcelains, pl. 61; the Los Angeles Exhibition of Chinese Ceramics, 1952, Catalogue, no. 274; and the example from the Brundage Collection, shown in New York, China Institute in America, Exhibition of Ming Porcelain, 1970, Catalogue, no. 30. A slightly smaller Hongzhi-marked dish of this type in the National Palace Museum Taipei, is illustrated in Monochrome Ware of the Ming Dynasty, Book II, pl. 2. Two similar examples from the Edward T. Chow Collection, were sold in Hong Kong, 25 November 1980, lot 39, and 19 May 1981, lot 444.
